I first came across this show when she did a bit during ALT GRL WRLD last year but didn’t think that much of it then as devoid of context it did not make that much sense. For some reason I got it into my head to try and see it this year to the point that I abandoned seeing other shows and made it so I could definitely see this show before closing down my comedy festival shows this year due to no trains for two weeks.

There is an odd opening voice-over about the performer visiting a convent and having the nun pray for everyone, but as the “Sister Wendy on Piss Christ” interview proves, people’s views on nuns are way behind the times now!

This was also more of a clowning show in that there are dialog sections but a lot of it is about the physical gags and audience interaction. Thankfully not with me as I had already been up on stage for the previous two shows. The audience seemed more than up for it this night and even went above and beyond kneeling and eating the grapes that been in the performer’s mouth when they did not need to!

They do show their bum a lot, but after the first few times it does lose its impact and she has to do a lot more to gain the audience’s attention. They do at least have the Dyson stick vacuum as part of the show and can clean up the bread after (hence the “gluten” warning).

Another show where it is going to be up to the audience you see it with as to whether it is going to be a good show or if the reaction is not good then the rest of the show will not have the vibes to continue.

Extra credit must go to the live keyboard player for the music, which I did not really think this show would have. Sort of fits with there being a lot of music in churches these days. I used to go to a music festival where one of the more popular venues was the Uniting Church down the street and I even went there a couple of years back to see the 20^th anniversary of the community choir.

Claire even did a self-insert in one section about being fascinated by Roman Catholic ceremony after coming from an Anglican upbringing. The segment about seeing a certain New England MP in the church on Good Friday in Armidale was quite unexpected!

This is a bit more of a harder one to recommend to a more general audience. You really have to be in the mood for it and be in quite a narrow band of people who would be up for whatever was going down. Does seem to be quite a LGBTIQ+ friendly show for some reason if the makeup of the audience was anything to go by.
