5th April 2025
Featuring Ruby Teys, Steph Broadbridge, Kate Dolan, Johana Cosgrove, NUN SLUT, Hannah Malarski, Florence Fable
What happened with this is that I had to book before I actually knew who was on the lineup as it is announced the same week it is on due to availability of the performers and whatnot. I was hoping Bella Louche would be in it as she has performed in it before and also Adelaide Fringe I think? Was actually someone I know who went to Adelaide to see it.
Ruby Teys was late due to her previous show running late for various reasons so it was a “hurry up and wait situation” when I got downstairs. I got to stash away the Zinger box at least and even was nice and got a drink from the bar and did not just drink my Pepsi Max from the KFC instead.
I had actually walked past this show at Melbourne Fringe last year with Ruby yelling out the door to someone eating a pie who was not allowed to go into the theatre until he had finished it (those pies made the whole place stink!)
As with any showcase show the show either succeeds or fails on the quality of the acts which explains why some of the acts did not work as well in context of a 5 minute bit. Ruby just did the first bit of her show again but I do not know about the other shows since I had not seen any of them. The acts who had a song or something they could easily perform out of context seemed to work better in this lineup. NUN SLUT was a bit confounding and not actually in the comedy festival this time so I am not sure how it would work as show by itself. Surely showing your bare bum is funny once or twice?
Ruby contributed the show as MC and having to get changed into her show costume while the other acts where on. She did get admonished by her friend Johana Cosgrove for having a live microphone on her headset when she was offstage.
There was at least a lot of variety in the acts from normal stand up to burlesque and also the physical clowning acts. Some of the audience seemed a bit too into it somehow? Or maybe they had just taken some of their disco biscuits early? They were off to POOF DOOF after.
On balance I liked the acts that were on for the night but a lot of them were not really for me as it turned out. Was one or two people I would like to go see after seeing them at this showcase but maybe not during this festival as I am tapping out.
Rating: 3.5/5 (dependant on acts on the night)
