Lomond Hotel 40th Anniversary – My gigs there 2004 to 2024

One of the first places I went out to in Melbourne northside or was asked to go to a gig for a special occasion and given money to get a taxi home after. I remember having a go at JVG for making fun of the pub on-air and he pointed out he was at the same gig I was at.

When RRR FM moved across the road in 2005 things kicked off for the area (RRR FM gentrified East Brunswick, don’t try to hide it), people would go to the Lomond after RRR BBQ Day and eventually when the RRR performance space opened over to it also. Specialty was the famous Lomond chicken schnitzel sandwich. It lasted quite a while at the same price but all things change and it eventually had to move on.

Due to living south of the river and the Caravan Music Club being closer to me I was going there more often when it was still in Oakleigh. Moving further out where I had to get a train home rather than the tram also did not help. When I went to a gig there I would often leave after the first set as it was a locals’ pub the band would wander off for an hour and then not finish until late.

RRR BBQ Day finally ran itself into the ground, some of my favourite photos were from that day when I bought along a copy of “The BBQ” on DVD and various people posed with it. I had a photo from this venue in my photo exhibition in 2012 also with Dan Warner and Ian Bland.

It says a lot that the year I wasn’t living in Melbourne I still ended up at a gig here for someone’s birthday and on a Sunday when it was generally a pain to get down to Melbourne.

Moving over to the western suburbs also meant I did not get there that often but if I do it is always a big occasion. The last gig I saw there for the Junes I decided to stay until the bitter end and it sounded like some people had not even started. I certainly tied one on for that show and surely it is going to be a big one for their 40^th celebration.
