It’s been a couple of years since I had been to see Bron Lewis as I had meant to last year but they seemed to schedule all the women comedians at the exact same time earlier in the evening so you had to choose one or the other. Plus I had several people I knew it was their 20th anniversary in the festival last year so I went and saw them.
I do know several people in the education and teaching area and they have a set schedule or have to leave early from gigs to do their lesson plans so I had recommended Bron’s shows to them in the past.
It was great to see Bron moving up through appearances on Have You Been Paying Attention and Thank God You’re Here and on the Gala so I knew this would be a popular show this year. The particular show I went to was sold out but I had gotten tickets a while ago so wasn’t concerned about missing it.
Was a bit confusing with the extended part about her four year old son at the start of the show, but it eventually makes sense later in the show. I will not say exactly why as it is best you find out these things yourself.
The main part about teaching was broken down into several sections of the most asked questions Bron has gotten about her former profession. The staff room would also have the windows covered over as it means you would get to escape people always looking at you all the time and wanting guidance. Some Hollywood stars have a “no staring at the star” rule on set for this reason.
Was some discussion of why people return to teaching if they did not have a great time there themselves. “Revenge” quite possibly being the worst motive. I have briefly chatted to Bron about someone I know who went back to do training at a community school where they actually went to school and she said she could “never” do that. I went to a country high school where the same teachers taught multiple generations of the same family. One retired art/metalwork teacher from the same school announced their cancer diagnosis and had 600 messages on their page in a couple of hours.
Bron was a bit of a snappy-Tom during the show at a poor old lady in the front row. In particular when her phone rang. Phone are confusing now considering some of them do not have a physical off button unless you change the settings. I have thought I definitely turned my phone off before only to have not and I only find out when I check and the phone is still on later.
It was a funny show especially her reaction when someone yelled out the name of one of her students as they were actually at one of the shows she did in the town where she taught and remembered someone who knew the student there. Also her tech saying it was actually a different show that was worse than the one she thought.
No thanks to the venue making people enter and exit through the same narrow stairs meaning I was late for another Token artist just up the road. Even Comedy Republic and Comics Lounge have the option to send people out the back stairs to empty the venue quickly. This is an OHS issue and I will raise it with the management company.
Well worth it if you like Bron or want to see someone who has been on the TV and on their way up in terms of their career. I had an entire night of women comedians that night but if you want to mix it up you can see Broden Kelly straight after at the same venue (you would have to go down and come up again probably.) I did give Broden a clay sculpture of himself before I left “how did you know I would be here?” I didn’t I only found out on the night! Hopefully he does not attempt to put it in the kiln that type of clay is not to be put in the kiln.
