The Butterfly Club, Friday 24th January 2025

I was looking a few months forward to comedy festival shows at the Butterfly Club and came across this show so thought I would go along and then go to Honky Tonk Town at the Gem afterwards.

There wasn’t really much about the performer in the show on the ad for the show only listed as “the artist” who I did find out about after the show. I had not heard about them before this show so not sure how much difference that would have made.

I have been doing online life drawing since the pandemic lockdowns and have been interested in art for a lot longer so that was really what interested me in the show. As I said to the artist after the show I went to the life drawing downstairs in the same venue.

The concept of the show is the artist improvises an artwork each show based on suggestions from the audience using poster paint due to ease of cleanup and parts of their body including their arms and face but with the artist having a veto if they do not want to do it.

On the night I went there were about 15 people there which made it better for suggestions, not sure how it would have been on the night with only a couple of people. I did get to yell some things out which I was happy enough with how they were portrayed.

There was some background music but it was really low-key and not really the main focal point.

What I liked about the show is that I really could not predict where it was going to go and I do not have a bias against improvisation like some people.

As I have found myself you have to watch how long it will take to actually draw or paint something. This comes up more in limited pose times during life drawing and also here when they had 50 minutes of showtime to fill and at one point the artist thought they were rushing through it.

The artist said they are not keeping the artwork due to not having the storage. Even only doing drawing once per week I am still having trouble storing stuff after only 4 years of doing so. The work is quite ephemeral so you are permitted to photograph and film the performance and share to socials.

I enjoyed the show and would recommend going to see if it there is another run of it as it is now finished its’ run. Recommended to other artists and creatives and anyone who would like to see something creative.
