Retreat Hotel gigs (2003 – 2023) – Tim's Melbourne Blog

“She had a show on community radio, I tuned in, I fell for her even more…”

I can’t say her name she will get a little bit cross with me but people who knew me at the time who will know who I am talking about. I had seen her around at gigs in the year I started going to gigs properly (which happened to be when I started seeing GIT around town) and finally got to talk to her properly at the Red Hot Poker Dots gig in the backyard at the Retreat before it was done up and all fancy. It was just a concrete slab at that time and a few chairs.

Either she mentioned it or was talking about it to someone else about her Elvis show on the radio later that night and I ended up ringing her at the station and then listening to her other show on Saturday nights quite a lot. I remember she even had bands guest on it at times out in Heidelberg.

As we both liked similar bands I would see her at the venue a lot and I know people who actually met their partners either at the Retreat Hotel or in the area as they were there a lot. I remember going to see Suzannah’s new bub sleeping out the back of the pub back in early 2006.

We were never really going out, it felt like we were to me, but that’s what can happen when one person thinks one thing and the other person does not know. It surely was an Academy award winning performance on the day I finally said what I felt about them. It was in the band room at someone’s gig I know quite well.

She does not owe me anything and I am at peace with it now but have not felt the same about anyone since then. Considering that before I met her I was told “you really need to get a real girlfriend” (I’d rather not say who said that either) it was quite a life experience just from going to the pub.

Most seen artist at this venue would be Suzannah for obvious reasons. The most recent gig I went to at time of writing was the Super Mario Kart Live gig with a live band. I have been to get lunch there but with the Brunswick Ballroom being where I go to most gigs in the area I have not been here that much recently.
