I was offered to go see this show for review and knew of Zoë Coombs Marr but had not actually seen here perform live in a show before. I know they had the character “Dave” based on every stereotypical male comedian they had met in the industry and had a tendency towards more off the wall concepts such as restarting their show over and over. By all accounts this sort of comedy should be right in my wheelhouse, so why did I not think that much of this particular show?
It is quite a concept to supposedly do a different show every night based on choices during the show, but it also makes it more difficult to tell a coherent story so everything just feels like bits of anecdotes they have not had the opportunity to tell anywhere else and shoved into the next part.
The show definitely has a “choose your own adventure” type vibe in parts, but without the hack of keeping your finger in the page you came from to go back if you didn’t like the path you chose. Some people would definitely not like the focus on spreadsheets as it would be too much like work for them and they went to the show to get away from that.
As with Greg Larsen’s show this show ran over, quite significantly in this case, but this one is different due to this show being in the Melbourne Town Hall which not only stuffs up the running times for shows after this one, but also people going to see things some place else, dinner reservations or even getting back in time to see the baby sitter. Not to mention the fact that the performer should know how long their own show should go and be able to cut things on the fly like say, a live music performer would do in a similar situation.
Stand up can be a bit overrated for it what it is, this at least tries something different but unfortunately does not seem to work as well as it should. By all means go if you are a fan of this performer but I would not go if you have not seen them before expecting a standard stand-up comedy show.
