MICF 2019: Friendlyjordies presents John Howard Really Sucked

Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2019

Lithuanian Club, Friday 12th April 2019 (Late show)

Jordan Shanks stated in his show he does not really care about reviews and seeing as the show’s run sold out (this was a bonus show), but I just wanted to say a few words about it. The last thing I saw in the venue was the After Hours Cabaret Club which feature Memphis Mae pouring McDonalds nuggets all over herself.

As he said himself he is preaching to the choir in his show as he knows which end of the political spectrum he is delivering his message to. It was a very young audience and it is a fallacy that young people these days do not care about anything. They care about too much and having grown up with social media as a part of their lives they are right across important social and political issues as are discussed in the show.

One of the jokes in the show was that it is not just a stand up show. It is a long form version of one of Friendlyjordies’ YouTube videos where he gets to expand on one of the topics that he would usually do in a video.

The main premise of the show is exposing what at poor economic manager John Howard was of the economy with many twists and turns that go into explaining this. There was a detour back to the 1940s which I would have liked to see as a show of its’ own but I’m just weird.

The $1.3 Trillion figure that the Howard government cost Australia can’t have just come out of his arse, he must have gotten it somewhere. I can’t say I have heard it mentioned anywhere else, but then again I don’t really read the Financial Review or pay that much attention to financial advice.

Having the show on the day after the 2019 Federal Election was called added an extra something. Friendlyjordies knows his audience and also says he is not aligned with one side or the other.

What he does do is encourage the audience to get their apathetic friends to register to vote as the electoral roles close the day before Good Friday (18th April) and you have no business in complaining if you couldn’t be bothered to vote.

There were a lot of laughs in the show mixed in with the factoids. Some people laughed at oddly specific things, like the two women sitting next to me who laughed at the brand of make up in one slide.

The show was filmed by Luke their photographer/videographer and Sandi says they always use him. Not sure if they are going to release a DVD or it will just be used for promotion like the last time they were in Melbourne for a show.

He did take the opportunity to do some edge lord bullshit like the school shootings joke which amused him greatly as the audience took about a minute to decide if it was funny or not. Using dead soldiers at Kokoda as a punchline was pretty low also. I am sure he will not get any blowback for using ANZAC as a joke as he is not Muslim, a person or colour or female.

Cheap shots abound in this show, but they come and go so quickly they kind of blur into each other. A bit rich piling onto Yumi Stynes when everyone else in the mainstream media he claims to hate has done so too.

When I was looking to get into university the most popular course was Journalism at RMIT, to the point they made 4000 people a year sit the Journalism Entrance Test. I made it through to the interview stage that was for about 20 first year places. These days why would you even bother as there are many other ways to get your opinion out to the masses even if nobody reads it.

I do know some people in the media but mainly the good ones such as community radio or people I have known for a long time. I do sympathise with people from the Age who had to go work at the Australian. There are good people working at ABC 774 Melbourne as they used to be on RRR FM in Melbourne.

I would like to see Friendlyjordies do a guest spot on Biggsy’s show on RRR FM as they could have an informed chat on several topics of note.

He has done a video on Melbourne vs. Sydney since doing his show down here. I would like to see more of it outside of the usual tropes.

If you have missed the show’s Melbourne run then you are too late since it has already sold out. Other state hopefully in the future.

In all a good economics lecture and political history lesson with the “cool teacher” from your high school who let you swear in class and call him by his first name.

MIFF 2016: Talking Pictures – Jerry Lewis: The King of Comedy

Federation Hall, Saturday 6th August
Featuring Alan Finney, Shaun Micallef, Santo Cilauro, Chris Fujiwara, Frank Woodley and Lawrence Mooney

This session was recorded so I will just go over the highlights as I remember them.

There was an interesting mix of speakers including Chris Fujiwara who has written about Jerry Lewis and the Australian comedians who were a mix of working comedians and more senior ones with an interest in Jerry Lewis. Shaun Micallef in particular came across as quite the scholar of comedy and admitted to taping the soundtrack of Jerry Lewis movies from TV so he could practise lines from them.

Frank Woodley hit Lawrence Mooney over the head with an empty water bottle to demonstrate physical comedy is still funny. He also admitted to stealing a couple of jokes from Jerry Lewis for his TV show including one that took 6 months to practice and was only in the show for less than half a minute (the juggling of an funeral urn containing ashes).

Santo Cilauro said that growing up in a non-English speaking household the main things they watched were wrestling and Jerry Lewis movies as they did not require an understanding of the language to follow the story.

Most of the comedians on the panel admitted to being strongly influenced by Jerry Lewis to get into comedy and Shaun Micallef mainly did impersonations of his act during his university revue days.

There was some discussion of Jerry Lewis’ days working with Dean Martin but most of the time was taken up with his movies and that it would have not been the same if he had came along earlier as his comedy relied on people seeing him to work. Also that he plays the loser who wins on his own terms in his movies which is not as popular these days.

Even in his more serious movies such as Scorsese’s the King of Comedy he runs like he is in character and they did have nods to his character work such as the white socks and the scene with him holding the door shut to make it look like the other person was having trouble opening the lock.

There was some discussion on the Nutty Professor that Buddy Love was closer to Jerry Lewis’ real life persona but he still hams it up by having fey punches dubbed in with Hollywood punch sounds.

The movie the Patsy was also discussed with the big finale being a reshoot based on one of Jerry’s routines made to look like it was improvised but it could not have been as there was so much involved.

It was an interesting discussion and I would like to see more Jerry Lewis movies in the future now knowing a bit more about him and his movies.

MIFF 2016: The Love Witch (2016)

Director: Anner Biller
Starring: Samantha Robinson, Jeffrey Vincent Parise, Dani Lennon, Lily Holleman, Gian Keys, Laura Waddell

http://www.lifeofastar.com/

Elaine (Samantha Robinson) moves up into a mountain town looking to start a new life after her ex-husband dies in mysterious circumstances. She is a witch and uses love magic to get what she wants from men but it never turns out the way she expects. After picking up Wayne (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) from the park and going up to his cabin he also passes away, she does her best to bury him and look after evil spirits but things start to spiral out of control when she goes after another lover.

Just describing the plot makes this movie sound a lot more serious than it turns out to be on screen especially as it is difficult to describe the wonderful production design and costumes that were also produced by Anna Biller. A lot of the time it is a big warning if the director tries to do too much on the production, think Manos Hands of Fate but other times it can go all the way around to being awesome again. This is such a case and the paintings remind me of the lion wall hanging from Samurai Cop.

If a movie can make you sad that you can’t go to places in the movie and just hang out it is a good sign. One such place is the Victorian ladies tea room where it is women only with a harp playing and serving high tea all day. Elaine wears her wonderful pink dress and floppy hat there.

Her apartment is riot and filled with every clichéd thing you could think about witchcraft, but in bright colours and with very strong imagery. Elaine does wear a black dress at one point, but on the reverse it is rainbow.

There is a mention of black and white witches in the movie and it is not really made clear on which side Elaine belongs. She is just unlucky it seems and you do feel for her at times even if any normal person would not go so far.

The cast is all excellent and I would like to see another movie with some of the same people as they all worked well. Special props to the wizened old dude who “let it all hang out” in the group witch scene even though it must have been cold. Extra special huge love to Samantha Robinson for keeping it together for the pissing into the bottle scene.

Shooting this movie seems like it would have been bastard hard as you feel like people would have wanted to crack up laughing all the time and then all the makeup would have to be redone and there was quite a lot of it.

The movie runs off the track towards then end where it breaks the “show, don’t tell” rule to get everything wrapped up with the character. It just tries to do too much with the feminist message by dumping all the reasoning in the one scene. It was hinted at in the rest of the movie but if it was done properly there wouldn’t need to be a dump at the end.

If the director wanted to they could be an award winning production and costume designer on other movies, I am sure they have considered that but wanted to do their own movies. It is more a case of trying to do too much it does not always work out which is frustrating as the rest of the movie works so well.

I would still recommend this movie to a fan of retro horror films including Hammer Horror and older 60s style movies. Even though it is not explicitly set in the past people do not seem to be immersed in technology and actually talk to each other. There were a lot of the fashionable crowd at the screening and it has sold out at MIFF for both of the screenings.

Hopefully this movie does well on DVD/Blu ray and video on demand. Not sure what happened with all the associated artwork and costumes. I know some people who would quite like to buy them or at least get the designs to make them.

MIFF 2016: The Big Mouth (1967)

Director: Jerry Lewis
Starring: Jerry Lewis, Harold J. Stone, Susan Bay, Buddy Lester, Del Moore, Paul Lambert, Jeannine Riley

A comedy of errors with Jerry Lewis character going fishing and snagging a skin-diver who has been shot and gives him a map to diamonds, with the wacky coincidence being they are dead ringers for each other so everyone thinks he is the one they are after.

Just explaining the movie does not really do it justice and the movie is already seen as a classic so I do not really have that much to add. I did want to see at least one Jerry Lewis movie from the program of his movies on the big screen during the festival and chose this one as the time worked out for me.

This sort of film is not really made that much these days as it is difficult to pull off as there are so many things that need to go right. The comedy is very broad as you would expect with a more wacky edge from the actors being gun comedians especially the gangsters when they go mad.

I did like the fake FBI agent who seems like I have seen him in another movies playing the same role.

The part with the Chinese pearl dealer is embarrassing due to the white actor in yellow face but it is a product of the time. George Takei makes a cameo as the poor dude that gets dumped into molten plastic.

The caper and running around part reminded me a bit of it’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World and there is a big ensemble cast and a lot of people chasing Jerry Lewis’ character around towards the end.

I am not sure where you would be able to get this movie as it is not on DVD at the moment. Hopefully it will be out on video on demand soon. At least it is not locked in a vault.

Game Boys

Melbourne Fringe 2014
The Tuxedo Cat – Jackal Room, Saturday 4th October 2014

I had heard of video game inspired shows before in the comedy festival and fringe, but never gotten around to seeing them. This one seemed a bit different due to it being two brothers putting on the show and them sharing their experience. If it was my brother it would be lots of dead arms and teasing, but they manage to bring something different to the show.

There was some acknowledgement by the show’s creators that they expected a male-skewing audience but it is different from the 90s when it was mainly boys that played video games. In my audience there seemed quite a few women who came along with their partners and were happy to be there.

The basic premise of the show is about the two brothers growing up playing video games and the things they learned from them. While it would be advantageous to know the video game trivia going into the show, even you were just a casual fan you should get most of the references.

I enjoyed the Street Fighter II style introduction and that game and Mortal Kombat make up a significant portion of the show along with the competing brothers aspect. I did like the part about Goldeneye and a prop-heavy joke about Odd Job that you have to see to really get.

I also liked that they acknowledged that not everyone was able to buy games each month when they were growing up. Like myself they only received games for Christmas and birthdays and were happy with them. Having to share a single Game Boy on a trip around Australia certainly taught them how to share.

The part about games influencing their education was interesting, as I once had an English teacher who complained on an end of year report that I never wrote about anything except video games.

There were some dance moves and a demonstration of how the composer from Mario Paint is still being used to produce music to this day in a nod to the chiptunes movement.

The show had almost finished its run when I saw it, but hopefully it gets another run during the comedy festival or at some conventions around the place.

I would recommend going to see it if you are at all into games or enjoy game related humour.

Action, HK Style – My Young Auntie (1981)

Director: Lau Kar-leung
Starring: Kara Hui Ying-Hung, Lau Kar-leung, Hsiao Ho, Johnny Wang Lung-Wei, Yuen Tak, Gordon Liu Chia-Hui

After doing a favour for his dying master by marrying him to keep his property out the hands of his evil brother (Wang Lung-Wei), Jing Dai-Nan (Kara Hui) has to flee to the house of one of his brothers Yu Jing-Chuen (Lau Kar-leung) who she is now the “auntie” of despite being many years younger. His son Charlie (Hsiao Ho) is meant to be in Hong Kong studying, but arrives back early and ends up fighting with Dai-Nan and trashing the joint.

Cue many understandings and temper tantrums from both Charlie and Dai-Nan. When they both settle down Charlie takes her into town, where she gets made fun of for being a “country bumpkin” and ends up in a much too fancy dress, leading to another fight where they have to run from the cops.

Even though Dai-Nan seems to hate fun, Charlie is determined to show her a good time and after a quick musical interlude invites her to a dance. Unfortunately the dance is interrupted by the cronies of the evil brother “don’t worry Charlie, in Hong Kong we always fight at parties” and Charlie and Dai-Nan end up getting arrested. It was all a ruse to get the old man’s will and deeds back so Dai-Nan has to sign them over.

Assessing the situation and asking for the help of the other uncles, Dai-Nan decides to act on her own with Charlie tagging along to find the traps. Unfortunately they fail and Dai-Nan gets kidnapped. Will they get out of this bind or not? I’ll let you find out.

Phew! The synopsis does not tell you how crazy this movie is, with some fourth wall breaking shenanigans, many crazy cross culture exchanges, the dance sequence in western costumes, Gordon Lui in ridiculous hair, the dude with the sunglasses who never loses them no matter how many times he gets beat up and many other silly things.

You have to be in the right mood to see this as if you are expecting a serious kung fu movie you will dismiss it out of hand. I saw it on a double bill with Dirty Ho and on the tail end of seeing eight Hong Kong movies in a weekend at a special screening so I was ready for it. I almost cheered when Wang Lung-Wei pointed and there is even an almost a POV point at one point.

Not sure why they could not let the Young Auntie have the final fight scene to herself, she does not look like she needs rescuing the other times. Despite that, it is a funny movie and while not an essential watch worth having a look for if you want to see a movie similar to Lady is the Boss.

Action, HK Style – Aces Go Places (1982)

Director: Eric Tsang
Starring: Samuel Hui Koon-Kit, Karl Maka, Sylvia Chang Ai-Chia, Dean Shek Tin, Chan Sing, Tsui Hark

A daring high-wire diamond heist by master thief King Kong (Sam Hui) and his sidekick Gigolo Joe (Dean Shek) gets the attention of the authorities as neither of the parties that were robbed reported it to the police. The Governor of Hong Kong and top government officials decide to get Sargeant Kodojack (Karl Maka) in to catch King Kong as he is on the case of the international thief White Glove (Robert Houston).

Tough Superintendent Nancy Ho (Sylvia Chang) likes all her police to treat her as one of the guys and ends up arresting Kodojack after he unwittingly becomes the getaway driver for a separate robbery, leading to much amusement.

Not so good for King Kong is when Mad Max (Chan Sing) turns up vengeance on his mind and Gigolo Joe ends up being killed before he can tell him where the diamonds are hidden. Kodojack decides to trap King Kong into helping the police and even the White Glove helps behind the scenes as he also wants the diamonds for himself. Lots of wacky tomfoolery ensues including the strange scene of RC cars taking on full grown cars and winning with the help of explosives.

This reminds me very much of a live action cartoon similar to the Lupin series and this movie was the first in a series of six. It is very fun and pacey and full of interesting characters including a cameo by Tsui Hark as a ballet director. The scenes with the gang boss Mad Max are strange as he appears in riding gear and has his own synthesiser sting.

The bad hair and fashions are just a joy to watch as this movie couldn’t be more 80s if it tried. Special mention must go to Mad Max’s leather cat suit and also Kodojack ending up on stage dressed like Ming the Merciless in one scene.

Even with the killings and violence it does not seem to change tone and is more of a romp and James Bond spoof than a serious action movie. I liked that it had its own version of the hang gliding scene from the Man From Hong Kong although this one is part of a longer scene.

The characters are drawn very broadly as you would expect with this type of movie with the Lady Superintendent either being really tough or very girly after Kodojack at first pretends to like her to get her onside.

I understand this movie was released as Mad Mission in western markets. If you can, try to get the Hong Kong release as it is uncut.

Well worth your time if you are looking for something light and breezy, I am going to try and see the rest of the series.
