Fusion Annual 2024 (2023) Review

I had enjoyed this magazine well enough the last couple of years’ I ordered it with the early Kickstarter pledge to get all the magazines. This year they only did four titles including this one and no other bonus ones. Seems like some of them did not go so well as I noticed they were still trying to sell them all the way through the year.

This publication brings to mind the great multi-format magazines of the 1980s and 1990s from the UK such as Mean Machines and C+VG and in the early 2000s HYPER which was the last magazine I actually had a subscription to.

I do feel like this magazine is getting better as a lot of the contributors work on the other annuals, but it is a lot harder to get feeling for the voice of the publication if you only read it once per year. Perhaps if I was on the Patreon or the subscription site and got the smaller magazines more regularly it would be different but then I would have the same trouble I had back in the 1990s with the UK magazines turning up being 4 months out of date. I do remember having one games tip and one Mean Yob letter published in Mean Machines but it took at least six months after I posted it in the mail for it to actually turn up in print.

Print games reviews seem to have fallen by the wayside with the accessibility of the internet and video reviews with massive contrarians like Yahtzee and expert gamers who make even the most difficult games look easy. In this magazine there is an opportunity to point out games that might have been missed but still deserve a look and I had not heard of any of them.

There seems to be a mixture of retro and newer games and pop culture reviews where the 8bit annuals are exclusively more retro with new games being published on the old systems. It does seem to work here and it makes for a lot more variety than other retro publications as a lot of them seem to be churning through the same stuff all the time.

I would recommend this one if you want to read a different perspective to some of the bigger gaming publishers and like a variety of different topics to be covered in your magazine.

Toy Polloi Annual 2024 Review (2023)

The first off the rank for the Fusion Retro Annuals and as I enjoyed it last year I decided to go with the Toy Polloi Annual first. As with last year these seem to be a collection of articles that have been written especially for the annual with the author also contributing to the FUSION annual with some different articles. I have not really gotten around to watching any of the author’s videos as yet but I am still subscribed and follow their socials.

My complaints about the format seem to have been improved as soon as I got reading glasses and I flew through it at that point. There were some copies of other annuals available as A4 but it is the same content only blown up to A4 and that doubles the cost of shipping.

The toys are still interesting and similar to the ones I remember from Australia as we got the stuff from Europe but much later. There are some more obscure ones that never made it out of the UK I had not heard about.

In terms of the toys I actually remember having I do still have the photo of myself wearing a Stackhat and holding Optimus Prime and do remember having the M.A.S.K toys. Even back then I knew that show was specifically made to sell toys. The less said about the episode “The Sacred Rock” the better. Toys were only for Christmas and birthdays at our house but I had my birthday a month before Christmas so it was not much of a problem. For some reason my brother got the Decepticons and I was always Autobots. Cut to 2023 Christmas and my nephews and nieces got the Bumblebee remote control car.

As a photographer I enjoyed all the photos of the toys and the way they were laid out in the book and not just the same sort of photo every time. I did do photos of all the annuals when they arrived and it is a lot more difficult than you would think but much improved with a bounce flash it seems. There are whole social media accounts based around photography of toys so it is quite a specialised thing.

It was good to see another opinion on why the author was generally against 3D printing parts as they liked actually making it. You would think 3D printing was the be all and end all the way people bang on about it.

Also some pushback about the arguments on social media groups about collecting and the “right” way to do it. There is no really right way to do anything, do it however you want. When money gets involved everyone goes funny about it especially with some of the rarer pieces. Retro game collecting has overheated the market in similar ways.

Overall I did enjoy reading the annual and even rationed reading it during my lunch break so I would not rush through it and then it would be finished. Annual means you read it for most of the year I would think.

Recommended to people who collect retro toys or even if you have a passing interest int pop culture stuff and want to know more about toy collecting.

Godzilla Minus One (2023) Review

In the dying days of WWII Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) is a kamikaze pilot who has rejected his duty and lands on a remote island for repairs. Unfortunately a local giant reptile called Godzilla attacks and all the mechanics are killed when Shikishima freezes when he is asked to shoot the beast with his plane’s cannon.

Wracked by guilt he returns to his old neighbourhood only to find his parents have died in the air raids and his neighbour holds him in contempt. By sheer chance he is left holding the baby by Noriko (Minami Hamabe) who is surviving on her wits and was asked to care for the child by her dying parents and she has no idea how to do so.

The group starts to make a new life in the ruins, but the only job Shikishima can find is on a dangerous mine clearance boat off Japan as the pay is good even if it is dangerous. Unfortunately due to the tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946, Godzilla has mutated from radiation and become huge. This is a nice counterpoint to the Legendary Pictures Monsterverse where they were trying to destroy the monster in this case they created it.

Shikishima meets the new crew which include a navy scientist who is an expert in naval weapons, Dr Noda (Hidetaka Yoshioka), a hard-bitten Quint-like captain Akitsu (Kuranosuke Sasaki) and a youngster who never fought in the war but is eager to help. About a year or so into their work, the crew is given a new job to delay the monster until backup arrives but only Noda is told this and they are sworn to secrecy. The monster attacks and both boats of the mine sweeping crew engage, one is destroyed immediately and they only barely survive temporarily wounding the beast by exploding a mine in its mouth, which immediately regenerates. A heavy cruiser arrives and attacks but is destroyed by the Godzilla’s heat ray.

Awaking in hospital, Shikishima is worried about evacuating civilians only to be told the government is not telling people and the USA does not want to get involved to avoid escalating the conflict with the Soviets. The crew have been told they have to keep what happened a secret.

Shikishima returns home and finally tells Noriko why he still has nightmares as his war has not yet ended. He feels Godzilla is the ghosts of the people who died on the island come for revenge. She tells him if he has survived the war he is not meant to die now.

Godzilla then attacks Ginza where Noriko works and unleashes his heat ray, in the ensuing nuclear blast she pushes him to safety into an alleyway at the last moment and he swears revenge by any means necessary. Dr Noda prepares a civilian defence plan to destroy the monster as the military is not taking action with several backup plans, but Shikishima has a plan of his own and will not be talked out of it. Will it succeed? The very future of Japan is at stake.

At first glance this appears to be another Godzilla reboot like the Legendary Pictures storyline but with some important differences. In this case I could actually jive with the non-big lizard scenes and did not just like them to be over like with the English language version. They are an integral part of the story in this case and I don’t know if the original Japanese setting gives it more pathos but it seems to have more weight behind it.

Death means something in this version of the story. When people die they are gone and do not come back and Godzilla is a stone cold wild animal in this one with no redeeming features. The Showa era of Godzilla did get quite silly towards the end but there is no sign of that here.

Not going to spoil the end but it did remind me of the original movie somewhat and you can have another big lizard come back and still be called the same thing.

For the price that this cost to make it manages to look better in some scenes than the hundreds of millions of dollars version by Legendary Pictures which is video game cutscene at times and has a lot of dumb stuff in it. Everyone is playing super serious here and it shows.

The music does its job well and there is a return of the classic Godzilla theme at pivotal points in the movie and during the end credits.

In countries other than Australia this movie is opening on more screens, but in my city I could only find it screening at one cinema. It is a shame I could not see it at IMAX as it would have been quite an experience. The screen I saw it on was quite small in comparison.

You don’t really need to have seen Shin Godzilla or any other Godzilla movies at all to enjoy this as it is its own thing and doesn’t link to any other movies. There may be a sequel given the success of this one but it will have different characters in it and a new story. Not sure if they are going to redo the Showa era or do something different. They can jump around in the timeline and it would still work.

Well worth your time and definitely go see it if you get the chance.

Dreamcast: Year Two Review (2023)

Despite having sold all my then 18 year old games in 2018 when I moved back to Melbourne I did still have an interest enough in this system to be interested enough when this Kickstarter launched in 2020 to back it and was looking forward after it quickly reached its’ goal. As it turned out the Fusion Retro Annuals published 3 more in this time as they are using Kickstarter as a preorder platform these days and smaller publishers find out how much international shipping actually costs. Honestly just put it directly on the Kickstarter that shipping is going to be an extra cost on Backerkit and people will be more open to it.

I was still reviewing things for another website while I was reading this so it took a while to read through it even after I quit the website. For the smaller size it does manage to pack a lot into it and I even managed to get the interest from someone who worked on one of the Dreamcast games originally when I told them about the interview that mention Le Mans 24 HRS (they still have a Dreamcast and this game in a cupboard).

This magazine covers the second year of Dreamcast releases after it had already been announced it had been cancelled but they still had a full year of releases. I remember playing Skies of Arcadia for several years after the system was “dead” and still enjoyed it. Never took up the opportunity to buy $50 Dreamcast units when I saw them. Could have used at least one to replace mine that had a hole drilled in it to let out the evil spirits.

To be honest this is more of a niche thing than other video game magazines or books as the Dreamcast after all this time is a bit of a cult. I sold all my games for almost $400 as a job lot and that was even without a working unit to go with it (it did include the light gun).

This does suffer as with other magazines or books where they put all the sections together and there is a block that is all the same. I would prefer it mixed things up a bit more so you don’t get bored reading all the same thing.

It’s not a bad magazine but I would more imagine someone who is already into the Dreamcast and collecting retro games (early 2000s is retro now) being into this than more modern gaming fans.

There is a lot of heart here and many people were involved. I know from my own experience where I merely wanted a paragraph of text off people and supplied all the rest for a magazine is a lot of work let alone what they do here.

While I enjoyed this one well enough I would have to see how I go if I would back a Year Three magazine if it is going to take another 3 years to come out after it is funded. I have a lot of competing demands on my time and the retro magazine and book market is always moving.

Would that be funny?: Growing up with John Clarke (2023) Review

by Lorin Clarke

NB: I was originally writing a review of this book for another website, which I ended up quitting writing for right in the middle of MIFF, quite possibly the worst time to do so. Writing to Text Publishing they said I didn’t need to write the review but suggested I buy another copy if I felt guilty to give to someone else. Also Stewart Farrell asked if I was still doing a review and then insisted I do not, which pretty much guarantees I will do it. Specifically to annoy Stewart Farrell.

In case the above paragraph does not clue you in to the lack of critical distance that will be in this review yes I did not actually know who Lorin’s dad was and would not have cared. I remember going to her last book launch for “Our Last Trip to the Market” and supposedly her dad was there but he seemed to be good at not being seen if he didn’t want to. Kind of like seeing Paul Kelly walking around St Kilda with his hat pulled down and his collar pulled up but you recognise who he is with straight away.

I had known of Lorin when she was on RRR FM before the station ended up sacking the both of them for reasons I have not had properly explained to me (Dave Houchin would not say and I wrote to him personally), it turned out to be a good thing for both of them as they both went on to do the Stupidly Big podcast that I listed to over 400 episodes of. Doing anything consistently for a long time does help as I have found having to do 1000 words per week rain, hail or shine during the last 4 years of writing for a pop culture site.

Lorin also did the popular and successful Fitzroy Diaries series and Stewart Farrell is now a successful real estate agent in a regional capital so it worked out for the best for the both of them even if it didn’t seem so at the time.

As for how John Clarke’s death was announced on RRR FM I did not even know Lorin was related to him and it would have been rude for me to ask I had thought. I do remember ruining my rice cooker as I was thinking about Lorin and not putting water in it like I was meant to. The situation reminded me of how Terry Pratchett’s family and carer dealt with his death as they knew once the news went out the grief was no longer their own and they would not have control of it.

The format of this biography is not really a traditional linear narrative as it tends to jump around in time and format due to the family having a lot of extra materials they wanted included like old envelopes the school saved that John had written on when providing money for school activities and even a glossary of family terms.

As a look inside another family dynamic it is quite interesting as most people would not really hang out with other people’s families once they are not children themselves. I only know how going to stay at a friend’s place for a music festival seemed quite different than my own family and this offers the same insight.

Lorin has said a lot of other people wanted to write this story, but she insisted on doing it herself as she wanted to do it in her own words. Even just to be able to look at stuff her dad had written would have been quite hard as I know someone who had to get a trusted friend to listen to their partner’s music for the remaster of an album as they could not.

I never actually met John Clarke and had only seen Bryan Dawe when he was at Kinky Friedman’s gig at my friends’ venue but this book does make me feel like I know more about him and not in a parasocial way, but more like what he was actually like.

If I was to say this book had a feeling it would be like a warm hug from a friend as it does seem embracing and wanting to take you on a journey into a family like getting out the family photo albums when those were still a thing and not just Facebook galleries.

Well worth a look even if you don’t end up with two copies like I ended up getting. Or you could buy several and give them away as gifts I am sure the publisher would be happy for you to do so.

The Tote – Death and Rebirth 2 Electric Boogaloo

The Tote’s about be closed! Booo! The Tote’s been saved! YAY! Honestly, at this point it has “closed” and been “saved” more times than I have had hot dinners. Meanwhile a friend’s venue the Caravan Music Club that was really loved actually got the boot from a great location, moved further down the road and then permanently closed when the building it was in got sold. They are now down in South Gippsland as Archie’s Creek Hotel.

I was never in the cool Mess+Noise crowd who pretended they went to see live music but really just say on a message board being cynical and realised there were other forms of music than just rock and roll pretty early on. I had moved to Melbourne in 2000 but did not get to the Tote until 2004 to see a “Cry Baby” gig where I met the Town Bikes and Tim Tim the Clown (the clown is still working in his original act.)

Due to not being one of the cool kids who was lucky to live north of the Yarra going to the Tote either meant a taxi home or leaving early to get the last tram home. I went a couple of times per year still but not too much.

When it was supposedly “closing forever” I did manage to go to the very last gig there and then the SLAM Rally a month or so after. There was really a feeling after it was reopened with new owners that it would be different and I did really try for the next couple of years especially when I was working and there were gigs of note on.

After the celebrations of the venue’s 30th anniversary things started to slip again and there were grumblings about the owners not paying super entitlements allegedly dating back to many years before at previous venues.

I was living not in Melbourne for a year and when I came back I went to exactly one gig there and it had really changed and did not feel the same. At that point a lot of the bands I knew were not playing gigs there and people have moved further out of the city also.

With the revitalisation of the Abbotsford end of Johnston St there are more venues opening up further down the road and the Gem seems to be getting more gigs now that used to play at the Tote. It was not just COVID shutting down things for a couple of years, that happened to everyone it was just people have moved on.

I did put money into the Pozible for Shane and Leanne to raise money to buy the Tote freehold and put it in trust and will reserve judgement until I have actually been there for a gig a few times. All the best to their new efforts managing the venue and hope to see you down there soon. Halloween weekend 2023 is when they officially take over.

MIFF 2023: Hello Dankness Review (2022)

Well supposedly this is meant to be an exploration of the rise of Donald Trump through a bunch of movies and other pop culture cut up and stuck together which is usually 100% my jam, but why am I so enraged by this movie in particular?

It’s not like they are doing anything original or even something that you cannot do yourself if you have the time. It is just cutting things up and putting other words into people’s mouths. I still have the music video for the Cosmic Psychos where I downloaded the media files from the Department of Defence website and put them together in Windows Movie Maker (YEAH BOI!) to make a video for the song Drinking with the SAS as at the time there was not a video for it. I remember I had to send a video disc to Ross as he did not have a computer at the time so he could watch it.

I haven’t actually seen a lot of the movies and media they use for the clips so I was just lost and the audience really only seemed to be laughing out of politeness in some parts. There was an entire section that was just still pictures and a voiceover. This is some grade A bullshit along the lines of Trash Humpers, which I must admire them for actually getting this into the festival.

Yes I know there are other artist re-assembled movies like The Clock (24hrs in real time of scenes of clocks at the exact time in a movie) and the Movie Orgy but they at least had artistic or cultural merit. This was just pointing and laughing at one side of politics which we all know just encourages them to think they must be right if people disagree with them. These are people who celebrate their ignorance as a positive character trait and not only close the door to knowledge but also brick it up from the other side.

I had a terrible stomach ache and wanted to go the toilet after but also got stuck there for the Q&A with the filmmakers since people blocked the row and I could not get out. They did not really say anything that enlightening to be honest.

They did list all the sources they used clips from and all the sound effects with the actual name of the files they used so they are aware of the law. I believe that if it was screened in the USA it is the law it would not be allowed to be screened for profit which seems to not be the case in Australia?

Even though I found the entire thing annoying and distasteful especially the shit memes and on the nose part about the police (that joke is way too obvious and should have gone into the bin) you may like it but who could say? This movie is the exact reason why people hate progressive ideas in politics and it makes me not want to book things at the last minute any more.

MWF 2019: Sex Work on the Page

as part of the Melbourne Writers’ Festival 2019

Sun Sep 1st 2019, State Library Victoria, Isabella Fraser Room

with facilitator Jules Kim, Nadine Chemali, Fiona Patten, Nic Holas and Rita Therese

I was interested in this session as I follow a few sex workers on social media and even got asked by someone on Facebook to help look for someone as I was “familiar” with the sex industry. It should be fairly obvious by now my relationship with the industry, I have sex about once every two years if I am lucky.

I did follow one of the panel members but they blocked me and I can’t even fathom the reason, people just do a snap turn on Twitter and you can’t take it personally. Rita Therese talked about the need to curate herself so she did not turn off prospective clients and that she can’t promote causes as it will also distance some people from her.

The premise of the session was to discuss sex worker voices in print and the media. There was criticism from the audience Q&A that there weren’t enough currently working sex workers on the panel. There is a history with the MWF of them having an event around the “Invisible Women” book that included several SWERFs on the panel. Rita Therese said she had protested that event and now she is on a panel “suck it bitches!”

There was some discussion about the tragic incident in Sydney and it was a workplace death. Whenever someone is a sex worker and something happens to them that is the thing that is focussed upon by the media.

Nadine Chemali mentioned that we mainly hear from white sex workers and people of colour and those in marginalised communities are afraid to speak up as they are being persecuted. In a lot of cultures people are not open to speaking about sex. The many “massage” places around the place still have people who work at them and they are not heard from at all.

Nic Holas said he is out about his sex work and starring in hardcore porn, but not everyone at his work knows about it. He is more embarrassed from taking money from News Corp than working in porn. There was some discussion about short form writing and online outlets being more receptive to articles written by current sex workers, but if you work for a tabloid expect it to sensationalised.

Fiona Patten said she was outed as a former sex worker to her parents when someone faxed them the front page of a newspaper. She said she was the first former sex worker to serve in Victorian parliament “but many of my clients come before me”.  Fiona and Rita Therese both said they had supportive publishers in writing their books and Fiona always likes seeing new sex worker voices.

Jules Kim from the Scarlett Alliance and the member of the audience from Vixen Collective both spoke of the need to be more inclusive and did bring up the past controversies of panels about sex workers that did not have any sex workers on the panel.

There were some good recommendations of books written by sex workers but I did not take them down. I am sure the panellists will fill you in if you get in touch.

It was a good discussion with a lot of things covered. You can follow some of the panellists on social media or just a sex worker if you want a more interesting feed.
